![]() ![]() If the fire escaped control, catastrophe could quickly ensue, which is what happened at Eddystone Rocks off England’s south coast in 1755. Until the invention of the light bulb, the “light” in a lighthouse usually came from a flame. Here are five of those historical hazards. Early lighthouse attendants often faced particular risks of much greater magnitude. Still, today’s “wickies” have all the mod cons compared to their predecessors. They have to be self-sufficient, handy, happy with their own company, and comfortable with heights. Keepers live in isolation, endure violent storms, and must be ready to respond to the occasional shipwreck. ![]() Lighthouse keeping is not for the faint-hearted. Novem| 1,000 words, about 5 minutes Share this article Photo by Phil Rees/Alamy Stock Photo The Dark Side of Lighthouses Mouthfuls of molten lead, wild weather, and insanity: the occupational hazards of an early lighthouse keeper. In 2020 the Key West Art and Historical Society announced they designed a new small-group visitor area at the Lighthouse because of the Pandemic.Lighthouse keepers have always faced risks, but historical keepers faced a lot more of them. On display at the museum is the first-order Fresnel lens from the Sombrero Key lighthouse. The society operates the lighthouse and its associated buildings as the Key West Light House and Keeper's Quarters Museum. Īfter the Coast Guard decommissioned the Key West Light in 1969, it was turned over to Monroe County, which in turn leased it to the Key West Arts and Historical Society. The growth of trees and taller buildings in Key West began to obscure the light, and in 1894 the tower was raised twenty feet, placing the light about 100 feet (30 m) above sea level. In 1873 the lantern was replaced (it had been damaged by a hurricane in 1866), adding three feet to the height of the tower. In 1858 the light received a third-order Fresnel lens. It was 50 feet (15 m) tall with 13 lamps in 21-inch (530 mm) reflectors, and stood on ground about 15 feet (4.6 m) above sea level. The new tower for the Key West Light was completed in 1848. Due to efforts to reorganize the Lighthouse Board, Congress was slow to appropriate funds for the new lighthouses. Īs both lighthouses serving Key West had been destroyed in the 1846 hurricane, a ship, the Honey, was acquired and outfitted as a lightship to serve as the Sand Key Light until new lighthouses could be built. (The same hurricane destroyed the Sand Key Lighthouse, eight miles (13 km) away, killing six people, including the keeper, Rebecca Flaherty, another widow of a previous keeper.) Barbara Mabrity continued to serve as keeper of the Key West Light until the early 1860s, when she was fired at age 82 for making statements against the Union (Key West remained under Union control throughout the Civil War). Barbara Mabrity survived, but fourteen people who had sought refuge in the lighthouse tower died, including seven members of her family. The Great Havana Hurricane of 1846 destroyed the lighthouse the USS Morris, which was wrecked during the storm, reported "a white sand beach covers the spot where Key West Lighthouse stood". The first keeper, Michael Mabrity, died in 1832, and his widow, Barbara, became the lighthouse keeper, serving for 32 years. It had 15 lamps in 15-inch (380 mm) reflectors. ![]() The first Key West lighthouse was a 65-foot (20 m) tower completed in 1825. The process of sterilisation was laborious the solution was highly irritant and made administration difficult and sodium bicarbonate administration often produced too rapid a correction of the acidosis potentially resulting in a profound alkalosis.Īn alternative to sodium bicarbonate was needed: In the 1930’s there were several problems complicating the use of sodium bicarbonate to treat acidosis. It is obvious therefore, that the effects I had obtained are due to some of the inorganic constituents of the pipe water. As this water contains minute traces of various inorganic substances, I at once tested the action of saline solution made with distilled water and I found that I did not get the effects described in the paper referred to. I discovered, that the saline solution which I had used had not been prepared with distilled water, but with pipe water supplied by the New River Water Company. Ringer noticed that the experiments with tap water yielded different results from those with distilled water he deduced this was due to the fact tap water contained inorganic substances. Ringer’s lab assistant mistakenly substituted tap water for distilled water, in experiments they were performing on frogs hearts. The discovery of Ringers solution was an accident. In 1882 discovered a solution of salts dissolved in water to create an isotonic solution relative to the body fluids of an animal. That city, called Iram of the Pillars, sounded very similar to Ubar. Thomas’ book inspired Nicholas Clapp, and consequently, his research led him to a city mentioned in the Qur’an. Thomas said that he had found traces of the lost city and well-worn tracks that had been used to get there. In his book, he described the people of the region and the place called Ubar. He left behind a book he wrote in 1932 called Arabia Felix. ![]() Thomas persisted in his explorations anyway, but he died before having had a chance to find it. Merchants used that route to transport fine spices and highly valuable resins and essential oils for sale. Because each student is unique, teachers must use diverse strategies suited to students’ broad array of abilities and multiple intelligences, enabling all students to be true participants in a community of learners. With equal-access requirements and increasing rates of enrollment of students with disabilities and adult students in higher education, universities must find appropriate and efficient ways to create accessible materials that benefit and support all students. Adult students in higher education in the United States (U.S.) are as diverse as the over 4000 colleges and universities that they attend. higher education, particularly in metropolitan universities and colleges that serve urban regions with large populations of place-bound working adults in need of higher education and the certifications that come with that education. Students with diverse abilities comprise a growing population on college and university campuses. The instructional practices reported in this paper could support science instructors in designing teaching methods that promote self-management and social awareness to increase students’ academic outcomes. The observed student course assessment performance suggests that integrating SEL may be a viable strategy for promoting student interest in science, building stress resilience, and creating more positive engagement with students. The results of the present paper reveal that instructional practices supporting SEL are suited for engaging and stimulating learners’ multiple intelligences. The paper aims to assess the academic and behavioral-related outcomes of applying SEL in mineralogy, an Earth science introductory course in a four-year university. ![]() This article focuses on the implementation of practices that promote SEL in higher education and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. More attention should be paid to students’ emotions in higher education to enhance students’ engagement in the classroom and improve social awareness (i.e., respecting others, understanding other perspectives, providing help to those who need it), motivation, and academic achievement. Social and emotional learning (SEL) strategies develop skills linked to cognitive development, encourage student focus and motivation, improve relationships between students and teachers, and increase student confidence and success. ![]() ![]() Walker: When you come back to visit your family, what are your impressions of the area?Īminé: You know, I go back to Portland very frequently. You never, as a minority, you never felt welcome or felt like you belong there. I mean, I lived in a very Black neighborhood, but throughout the years it got very gentrified and things changed. What was your experience like growing up here?Īminé: It was OK. You were born and raised in Portland and went to Benson High. Walker: “Woodlawn” also prominently references your home neighborhood of Woodlawn Park. But it isn’t the main focus of the album. So that was definitely something I wanted to touch on. So, um, seeing him die was tragic, you know, for me and my friends. And for me, he was like a second dad that I saw on TV. You reference his influence mostly on the song “Woodlawn.” Why Kobe?Īminé: Kobe just affected every kind of young Black man in America who played sports. Walker: I think being jolted by a moment is not uncommon in your 20s or 30s, but one catalyst for you on this album seems to have been the death of Kobe Bryant. I thought I wanted to make something that I could play formy kids 10 years from now and listen to it and smile because what I say in a song really happened. That to me is what makes somebody’s legacy really cool and something that would last forever, when you could just be honest. I was inspired by a lot of albums, but one that inspired me a while ago was “4:44” by Jay-Z where I got to hear this veteran and one of the all-time greatest rappers alive be brutally honest in his music. When I started making “Limbo” I though a lot about legacy. I think it takes a lot of guts for an artist to just be honest like this on an album, because you don’t get to hear that that much in 2020 at least from a hip-hop perspective. I’m kind of 26 years old, going through a quarter-life crisis, just becoming an adult, really coming into my own. Walker: I don’t mean this in a bad way, but I think you sound a little lost - maybe existentially - on some of these songs.Īminé: I do feel lost. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me today. Jerad Walker: I’m here with Adam Aminé Daniel, better known as Aminé, whose new album “Limbo” came out last month via Republic Records. Listen to the interview above or read the full transcript below. The joyful quirkiness is still there, but on the album’s 13 songs (and one skit) it’s tempered with a healthy dose of what the musician refers to as “brutal honesty.” While that turn is certainly a sign of the distressing times we live in, Aminé also hinted at a deeper, existential cause in a recent conversation with opbmusic that also touched on his complicated relationship with Portland, his thoughts on the city’s protest movement, and the early musical influence of spending Sunday mornings with his parents.Īminé will be the musical guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on ABC this Thursday, Sept. On “Limbo,” that’s where he firmly plants his flag, establishing himself as one of the Northwest’s finest musical exports along the way. But it was his ability to deftly mix serious social commentary with irreverent humor and an almost unsinkable buoyancy that hinted at greater staying power. The songs on his debut record were marked by catchy, keys-driven beats and the kind of cutting pop culture references that involuntarily curl the corners of your mouth. Propelled forward by the summertime jam “Caroline,” he existed in a ( mostly yellow) technicolor world. In many ways, he was made for this moment.įour years ago, Aminé experienced a meteoric rise, almost entirely bypassing Portland’s local music scene on the way to mainstream success. COVID-19 has killed nearly 200,000 Americans, civil unrest has gripped his hometown for months, and wildfires are burning largely unchecked throughout much of the West, including the musician’s adopted home in Southern California.īut coming from the Portland-born rapper, it’s entirely plausible.
